On the eastern side of Dundee on the shores of the Tay, the suburb of Broughty Ferry is a popular location with a sandy beach and seaside esplanade. Formerly an independent burgh, it was incorporated into the City of Dundee in 1913. There are regular bus services to Dundee city centre and there is also a train station with services north towards Aberdeen and south to Edinburgh and Glasgow via Dundee. It is around seven miles from Carnoustie, close to Dundee airport, and around 75 minutes' drive to Edinburgh international airport.

Broughty Ferry has good facilities including shops, restaurants, cafes, galleries and play parks, as well as a 15th century castle near the harbour. There are three primary schools, with pupils going on to Grove Academy in Broughty Ferry or taking up high school options in nearby Dundee.
