The city of Dundee is situated on the north bank of the Firth of Tay, linked to Fife by the Tay road and rail bridges. Once famous for "jute, jam and journalism", the city is now also home to many biomedical, technology and digital entertainment industries, as well as the long-running Beano and Dandy comics. It was recognised by the UN as the UK's first UNESCO City of Design in 2014.

The city has good road and transport links, with Perth around 23 miles to the west and St Andrews 14 miles to the south-east across the Tay Bridge. There are extensive local and national bus services, and Dundee train station has services to Glasgow, Edinburgh, Perth and Aberdeen. Dundee airport has flights to London and Edinburgh airport is just over an hour away by car.

Dundee is home to two universities, two football teams and to RRS Discovery, Scott's famous Antarctic exploration ship. It has many facilities including a variety of shops, restaurants, pubs and cafes, as well as Ninewells Hospital, cinemas, a concert hall, ice arena, observatory, art centre, theatre and museums including the Dundee Victoria & Albert museum.
