The village of Friockheim is in Angus, around seven miles inland from Arbroath and eight miles from both Forfar and Brechin. It is within easy reach of Dundee, which is roughly 40 minutes' drive away. Aberdeen international airport is around 75 minutes' drive and nearby Dundee airport has flights to London.

The village name is a combination of Gaelic and German, and translates literally as ‘Heather House'. Local facilities include various shops, two village halls, a park and the primary school. Pupils can go on to high school at Forfar Academy.
