Kirkcaldy is one of the largest towns in Fife, with a population of around 49,000. The town is in south Fife, on a bay facing onto the Firth of Forth, and is around six miles south of Glenrothes. It is approximately 29 miles by road from Edinburgh, with regular train services from the town's railway station, which is on the main Edinburgh to Aberdeen and the Fife Circle lines. Situated by the A92, Kirkcaldy is within easy reach of the M90, with Edinburgh international airport approximately half an hour's drive away.

Kirkcaldy had one of the longest high streets in the country in the 17th century, leading to it being known as the ‘Lang toun', and is known as the birthplace of the philosopher and economist Adam Smith. The town has many facilities, including shops, cafés and restaurants, as well as a swimming pool, theatre, museum and art gallery, ice arena and three parks, as well as being home to Raith Rovers FC and the Fife Flyers, the UK's oldest ice hockey team. There is a monthly farmers' market and Kirkcaldy Links Market, said to be Europe's largest street fair, is held every Easter.

The town has 11 primary schools and four secondary schools, as well as a private school option.
