Laurencekirk is a small town in Aberdeenshire just off the main Dundee to Aberdeen A90 road, which has grown in recent years with a number of new housing developments. It is within commuting distance of Dundee, around 36 miles away via the A90, and Aberdeen, which is around 30 miles away. The town's railway station is on the main Aberdeen to Edinburgh line, and Aberdeen international airport and Dundee airport with flights to London are both around an hour's drive away.

The town was developed as a planned village in the 1770s, and was then known for its weaving and the manufacture of snuff boxes. It is the largest settlement in the Howe O' Mearns area, and houses the local high school, Mearns Academy.

The town has a primary school, Laurencekirk Primary, and there is also a good range of local services including shops, pubs, two parks, a community centre and library.
