The Angus town of Montrose is situated on the coast, between Dundee and Aberdeen. It is within commuting distance of both, with Dundee around 30 miles by car to the south and Aberdeen around 40 miles to the north, and regular train services to both. Aberdeen international airport is around 45 miles away and Dundee airport, with regular flights to London, is around 35 miles.

Montrose is situated on a natural harbour and has been a port for centuries, now also serving the offshore oil industry. It is also on the edge of the Montrose Basin, a two-mile square tidal lagoon, which is a nature reserve and haven for many resident and migratory birds.

The town has an attractive old centre, dominated by its tall steeple and including a museum and art gallery, and its popular, wide sandy beach is easily accessible. It also has golf links, including the Medal course, the fifth oldest in the world, and since 2008 has held an annual music festival, the Montrose Music Festival, known as MoFest, featuring local and national acts.

There are six primary schools in Montrose and one secondary school, Montrose Academy.
